Learning at the Beach | Synergize Learning

Lauren Torres • July 14, 2023

As we all know, summer is a wonderful time for children to relax, explore, and engage in activities that both entertain and educate. By combining the joys of outdoor play with educational content, we can ensure that your learner continues to grow intellectually even during the summer break.

Beach days are a great way to get your child outside, engage in physical activities, and sneak in some learning opportunities.

Here are our favorite learning-at-the-beach activities:

1. Seashell Sorting

Walk along the shore with your child and collect seashells! Once you have a good haul, have your child sort them based on different attributes such as size, color, or pattern. Together, create charts or graphs in the sand to display your findings. For younger children or those working on expressive language skills, have them give you a vivid description of their favorite shells from the bunch.

2. Beach Ball Math

Write numbers or math equations on a beach ball using a permanent marker. Toss the ball to your child and ask them to solve the equation or identify the number their hand is touching when they catch it.

3. Beach Observation Journal

Explore the beach with your child and encourage them to write about their observations. They can describe plants, animals, insects, or any interesting discoveries they make while exploring on the sand!

4. More Math Fun

The beach provides a perfect opportunity for sneaking in some math fun. Try counting seagulls or creating geometric shapes in the sand!

5. Beach Reads

Pack a book both you and your child can enjoy reading together! Set a timer to read for an age appropriate time.

6. Spelling in the Sand

Have your child write letters, numbers, or words in the sand to work their fine motor skills along with some spelling practice. Choose summer-themed words like beach, sand, squid, etc.
