Keeping Busy Brains Active This Summer

Summer break is so important for children. It allows them to relax, explore, socialize, play, and spend quality time with family. However, it’s still important for children to engage in learning activities over the summer to maintain their academic progress, discover new interests, and continue to foster a love of learning. Summer learning strengthens students’ overall educational development, and sets them up for success at the start of the coming school year.

Summer learning activities don’t have to feel “boring” – they can be fun and engaging so that your child is more open to learning over the summer break. We’ve compiled a list of summer themed learning activities that we love – we hope that you and your little learners have fun this summer!

Reading Activities

1. Summer Reading Challenge

2. Reading Passport

Create a reading “passport” for your child to fill out as they read books from their book basket. Let them decorate their reading passport and set a goal for how many “destinations” (books) they can visit during the summer. After they complete a book, add a stamp or sticker to the pages inside.

3. Book-to-Movie Adaptations

Choose a book that has been adapted into a movie and encourage your child to read the book first or together at bedtime. After they finish reading, plan a movie night to watch the adaptation together. Make it exciting – pick out snacks and make the sofa nice and cozy! After watching, discuss any differences they noticed between the book and movie.

4. Recipe Book

Have your child write down their favorite summer recipes, such as smoothies, popsicles, or picnic snacks. Help them create a personalized recipe book with step-by-step instructions. They can also show off their artistic skills by including illustrations!

5. Travel Brochure

Encourage your child to create their own travel brochures for a dream summer destination or even a place you plan to visit on vacation this summer! They can research the location, write about its attractions, draw pictures, and even include maps!

6. Summer Bucket List

Ask your child to create a summer bucket list of activities they want to do during the break. Encourage them to write short descriptions of each activity and why they are excited to try them.

Math Activities

7. Outdoor Number Hunt

Create an outdoor scavenger hunt where your child can search for numbers or math equations (written on index cards) hidden around the outdoor area. When they find each card, have them identify the number or complete the math equation. On a rainy day, you can easily move this activity inside the house!

8. Water Balloon Estimation

Have your child estimate the number of balloons it will take to fill a container or a bucket. Then, test their estimation and count the actual number of balloons required. Last step – water balloon fight!

9. Lemonade Stand

This one is an old classic -- as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Help your child set up a lemonade stand and introduce them to basic business concepts such as profit, expenses, and pricing. Help them calculate the cost of ingredients, determine a selling price, and track their sales and profits. You’ll have a budding entrepreneur before you know it!
